Artists’ Books

An artists’ book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the form or function of a ‘book’ as inspiration. It is the artistic initiative, seen in the imagery, choice of materials, creation process, layout and design that makes it an art object.

I started using the format of an ‘unfolding page’ firstly as a way of recording when I was out walking and drawing in the landscape. It seemed to make sense that a record of experience that happened over time should also use a format that mirrored this, creating long, panoramic style drawings that couldn’t be seen all at once, but grew section by section as I moved from place to place.

This sketchbook work evolved into making artists’ books as objects in their own right which became more complex and layered using original monotype print collage and different media to build the imagery and narrative.

I love that this format allows the viewer to travel through the work, gradually unfolding the visual story like a long walk or good daydream that can be returned to time after time.

Land walk Volume 11

This book was made as part of my ‘Wild Margins’ collection investigating the beautiful and diverse hedgerows that border our coastal pathways here in Cornwall.

I wanted to capture a feeling of wild nature that has its own rhythm in amongst the incredible diversity and seeming chaos of these amazing natural structures. Like a slow walk along the coast path sheltered from the elements, while peeking through the leaves, flowers and stems to the horizon beyond.

I used collaged paper lithography prints derived from photographs and drawings of small moments in the hedgerows to create the focal points along the length of the piece. I then used graphite in different forms to draw across the pages to bring connection and cohesion to the work as a whole.

This piece stands up on its own so could be displayed open on a shelf or framed in an open concertina, allowing the story to unfold as the eye travels across each small panel.

Land walk Volume 7

Inspired by my walks and many hours spent drawing and daydreaming in the sand dunes at Gwithian, Cornwall.

This book is comprised of four monotype prints collaged together into one continuous strip. I then worked over this using charcoal and graphite, adding small elements to add interest and transition the imagery and story from one section to another.

I also used repurposed book pages for the covers, which makes it feel more ‘booky’ and also helps the work stand on its own once unfolded.

7.5 x 10cm folding out to 100cm.
